Dr. Marc Fagelson is a professor of audiology at East Tennessee State University. In 2001, he opened the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VMAC) Tinnitus Clinic that now enrolls more than 1,300 patients. In July 2023, Dr. Fagelson was voted

chair of ATA’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), responsible for coordinating applications for the ATA’s Innovative Tinnitus Research Grants program. These applications are reviewed and recommended by SAC’s 28 leading international researchers, with final funding decisions made by the ATA Board of Directors each grant cycle.

Dr. Fagelson co-edited with Dr. David Baguley two texts published by Plural that center on tinnitus and disorders of sound tolerance. He has more than 50 publications and has given more than 100 conference and workshop presentations. He received a BA in English and MS in audiology from Columbia University, and his PhD in hearing science from the University of Texas at Austin.

The Sleep-Tinnitus Connection: ATA-Funded Research and Real Stories

Dr. Robin Guillard is a postdoctoral researcher specializing in tinnitus, focusing on the interactions between tinnitus and sleep and tinnitus heterogeneity. In 2024, he received an ATA Innovative Tinnitus Research Grant, supporting his investigation in France on how sleep impacts tinnitus.

Originally trained as an engineer, Dr. Guillard transitioned into entrepreneurship and neuroscience, founding Zeta Technologies to develop solutions for tinnitus. Although the startup’s clinical trial didn’t succeed, the experience underscored the need for more research.

He also co-founded Siopi, a platform supporting tinnitus patients, collecting data, and promoting clinical trials. Through research and patient-centered innovation, Dr. Guillard strives to improve understanding and care for those with tinnitus.

Ken Rawling, a trial participant, experienced sudden-onset tinnitus in his right ear in April 2015. Applying his expertise in statistical methods and experimental design, he conducted a single-subject research project that identified sleep quality—not quantity—as a significant factor influencing his tinnitus perception.

In spring 2023, Mr. Rawling presented his findings at the Tinnitus Research Initiative conference in Dublin, where he met Dr. Robin Guillard. The two have been collaborating ever since to better understand the interactions of sleep and tinnitus.
